Yang Liping's Peacock Skirt

This unique peacock skirt was originally designed by renowned Chinese dancer Yang Liping for her celebrated solo dance Spirit of the Peacock and was personally donated by her to the museum. It is the only piece of its kind in China.
About the Artist
Born in 1958 in Eryuan, Yunnan Province, Yang Liping is a celebrated dancer of Bai ethnicity. Passionate about dance from an early age, she joined the Xishuangbanna Song and Dance Troupe in 1971 and, nine years later, moved to the China Central National Song and Dance Ensemble, gaining nationwide fame for her “Peacock Dance.” She was the first dancer in China to present a solo evening performance.
Yang was named one of China’s Top Ten News Figures in 1988, and in 1989 the documentary Yang Liping’s Dance Art was released. In 1992, she became the first dancer from mainland China to perform in Taiwan. Her solo Spirit of the Peacock won the Gold Award for Classic 20th-Century Chinese Dance Works in 1994. She later created, directed, and starred in the acclaimed stage productions Dynamic Yunnan (2003) and its sister work Sound of Yunnan (2009). Over the years, Yang has performed across the world—including the United States, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Russia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong—and her self-produced film Sunbird won the Grand Prize at the Montreal International Film Festival.
