Double Fish Basin (Celadon)

Xiahou Wen (China, August 1935 - )

Xiahou Wen, a master of Chinese arts and crafts, was born in Fenyi, Jiangxi Province. He graduated in 1963 from the Fine Arts Department of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and, in the same year, joined the Longquan Celadon Factory to devote himself to the creation and research of celadon.

Xiahou pioneered a unique ceramic type that combines the classic Ge kiln and Di kiln traditions, and he innovated techniques in underglaze decoration and Linglong (pierced) porcelain. Over his career he has designed more than 1,700 works, including the celebrated Nine-Inch Double Fish Basin, which is part of the collection of the Ziguang Pavilion in Beijing’s Zhongnanhai compound.
