Celadon Double-Handled Basin

Artist: Xu Dingchang (China, 1955)

Xu Dingchang is a senior master of Chinese arts and crafts and president of the Longquan Celadon Industry Association. He began his career in 1973 at the Shangyang Porcelain Factory and founded Zhenchang Porcelain in 1996.

For more than three decades, Xu has pursued the art of Longquan celadon, blending classical techniques with modern aesthetics. Specializing in fully hand-thrown pieces, he is known for works in the style of Southern Song imperial kilns—thin-walled, thickly glazed, and elegantly simple. Multiple layers of glaze create a jade-like luster, while his refined trimming technique adds delicacy and precision.

His creations have won numerous national gold, silver, and bronze awards and are held in collections including Zhongnanhai’s Ziguang Pavilion, the Great Hall of the People, museums, and private collections. Xu serves as a director of both the China Arts & Crafts Association and the China Ceramic Art Association, and was named a Zhejiang Province Master of Arts and Crafts in 2005.
