Rubbings of the Stone Carvings from the Wuliang Shrine (Complete Set of 45 Leaves)

Category: Rubbing

Description:
The Wuliang Shrine is a Han-dynasty ancestral hall and burial site located in Jiaxiang County, Shandong Province. Built during the Eastern Han period (Emperors Huan and Ling), it is constructed entirely of stone and decorated with richly detailed carved images. The carvings draw from a wide range of subjects and vividly reflect many aspects of Eastern Han society—its customs, social conditions, institutions, and religious beliefs.

The stone reliefs of the Wu family shrine constitute the largest and best-preserved group of Han-dynasty steles and pictorial stones in China. They have attracted scholarly attention since the Song dynasty, when epigraphist Zhao Mingcheng and others first studied them, and from the 19th century onward they have also been the focus of extensive research by Western scholars.
